Description

Devils Lake Wetland Management District (WMD) is located in the heart of the Prairie Pothole Region of the United States. It was established in 1962 to purchase and protect wetland habitat for migratory waterfowl and other wildlife in northeastern North Dakota. The primary objectives of Devils Lake WMD are to provide wetland and grassland habitat needed by waterfowl in the spring and summer for nesting and feeding and to provide migration habitat for hundreds of thousands of waterfowl in the spring and fall.

The District manages 209 Waterfowl Production Areas (WPA) totaling 48,066 acres, 154,957 acres of wetland easements, 3,740 acres of grassland easements, and 18,666 acres of easement Refuges.

Devils Lake WMD is home to all of the waterfowl species found in the Prairie Pothole Region. Mallards, gadwall, and blue-winged teal are the most abundant ducks, with several other species of diving and dabbling ducks common to the area. Giant Canada geese have been reintroduced and are abundant in the area. Spectacular concentrations of waterfowl and other migratory birds can be found in the WMD each spring and fall. Most notable are the large flocks of snow geese. WPAs also provide habitat for many resident species of wildlife, including white-tailed deer, sharp-tailed grouse, Hungarian partridge, pheasants, turkeys, and moose.
